How we work

Attention to detail, from strip-down to handover

Good work comes down to attention to detail, in the small jobs as much as the big ones. We measure everything that matters, check it against the spec and record every step, so you know exactly what went into your engine or your car.

  1. Measure

Bearings, bores, pistons, ring gaps, crank and valve clearances are measured and checked against the manufacturer's or the build spec's tolerances. Anything outside them is dealt with before assembly.

  2. Record

Readings, torques, parts and part numbers are recorded against your build as the work happens, not written up from memory afterwards.

  3. Hand over

You get the build sheet: what we found, what we did, what was fitted and what every reading was. It's useful when you run the engine in and when you sell the car.

An example. Every build gets its own sheet.

About

Fifty years of building engines

Trackday Cars is built on more than 50 years of engine building. That covers most of the British manufacturers, from Austin, BL, MG and Triumph onwards, and European makes including Ford, Vauxhall, VW, Audi, Peugeot, Renault and classic, pre-GM Saab.

More than 40 of those years have been spent on high-performance and race engines of many makes, along with the systems that feed them: carburettors and the early generations of fuel injection that few workshops still know well.

That experience goes into every engine we build and every car we prepare in Southend-on-Sea, and the build sheet records it all.

  3. How it's usedRoad, track days or racing, and which series.
  4. What you'd likeA fresh build, a rebuild, track prep, or a problem to sort out.
  5. Budget and timingA rough budget, and when you need the car back.
